…City Hall/ stakeholders to plan emergency meetingEven as Guyana seeks to forge ahead with plans to become a tourist attraction that is able to compete with that industry’s ‘hot shot’ nations, garbage continues to be one of the many problems harming the slow growing sector. While that is the view of many in and out of the industry, operators with firsthand experience held no reservations last week in expressing their grave concern over the issue.Members of the tourism community have requested from Mayor Hamilton Green a possible every -other –month meeting to tackle the garbage problem. City Hall had hoped last week, to have a huge turnout from members of the tourism sector to address the matter. They were seeking to involve members of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) among other groups in a massive cleanup campaign. The meeting did not take off since there was a misunderstanding with the Town Clerk over phone calls the day before. Some of the tour operators at the meeting in the Mayor’s officeHowever,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, those who managed to attend the meeting, revealed several pains which they go through to keep their businesses afloat. A female representative of THAG said that they are surviving the best way they can. She explained to Mayor Green, his Deputy, Patricia Chase-Green, other Council members and the media that, “believe it or not, we are doing our own garbage collection in order to survive.”She continued, “you cannot have garbage on your premises for a certain number of days…the flies are just too much, especially when you have an eating establishment. This is the case at Cara Lodge,NCAA Baseball Jerseys, Roraima, Bransville, El Dorado and these are just what I am aware of,” the tour operator explained.Council members were then asked, “”Do you know that we have to have a specific route to get visitors into Georgetown?  And you have to tell your driver, do not use this route, you have to use this one… for the sake of the image of Georgetown. We have been surviving the best way we can and have to be hiding things from visitors. When they visit the city, you have to know which streets to tell the drivers not to use… and that is stressful!”Another representative of the tourism sector expressed that feedback from her clients is not the best. She asserted that most of it is “really negative” and bad for business. The tour operator said that Georgetown is a beautiful city and can be restored.“I look at City Hall and its crumbling and it is really sad. We are willing to work with you in whatever capacity. Tell us what we have to do,” the operator urged.Mayor Green advised that THAG could very well be the catalyst to move forward since their interest in the garbage situation is specific. He related further that people are talking about tourism, but there are two components of tourism.  “One,NFL Jerseys China, there must be no garbage visible in the city or anywhere. When you leave the airport no one wants to see garbage,Cheap Jerseys, it is a stain,Cheap Jerseys USA, a disincentive. So you can’t talk about tourism and have garbage for whatever reason.”“Secondly, in terms of the modern world; what is attractive, what adds charm to any city is ancient colonial buildings. Those fancy buildings on Regent Street and Lamaha Street may be expensive and functional, but they are not charming. And I am writing the President about it, because they want to treat City Hall like if it is our problem. I am writing the President to tell him that City Hall belongs to the nation that he heads. In fact, any heritage site is not the property of the owner, but the property of the state and the people. In some countries heritage sites can be sequestered and put within national trusts for preservation.”“In some cases where owners can’t afford to take care of it, it is taken away with proper compensation. But in this country we have cultural barbarians, so they allow St. Barnabas Church to go and they want City Hall to go, but we won’t allow it.”The Mayor concluded that THAG and other tour operators need to become proactive and help to restore the Garden City and save the little that is left of it.Deputy Mayor Chase-Green said that hopes are that stakeholders would be able to offer some help on the garbage situation and offer ideas for an action plan. She mentioned that Christmas is approaching while the rainy season is not far behind. The idea, she said, is to create a better Georgetown and to present a tourism-friendly city.
